WHAT IS A PEDORTHIST?

Canadian Certified Pedorthists are trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics. They have specialized education and training in the design, manufacture, fit, and modification of foot orthotics and footwear.

Pedorthists help alleviate pain, abnormalities, and debilitating conditions of lower limbs and feet that left untreated could result in limited mobility.

Certified Canadian Pedorthists must undergo a rigorous training process. Candidates must first have a University degree that includes courses in the area of anatomy, medical conditions and disease, physical assessments, and ethics. Post degree pedorthics certification requirements include 4000 hours or 3 years of clinical, technical training in the areas of assessment, orthotic fabrication, and dispensing skills, shoe fitting and shoe modification.

The College of Pedorthics has a duty to regulate and certify Pedorthists and to "protect the public by ensuring standards of practice." Pedorthists must continually upgrade their education to maintain their certification.
